A Nerd’s/Gamer’s Survival Guide to NYC

Typically when you think of New York City, you think of sporting events, Broadway plays, and the exciting nightlife. That stuff is cool and all, but some of us enjoy the nerdier things in life. You may not know it yet, but the city is actually a gamer’s paradise! The following locations are some of the coolest places to hangout, for those of us whose idea of fun is a bit more progressive. Because the Hubneo team is all about VR, we’re going to give some Virtual insight into a few of the more traditional places we discuss below.

1. VideoGamesNewYork - Video game store

Revisit your childhood with some of the most iconic video games ever developed. We guarantee a trip down memory lane when you stop by VideoGamesNewYork, a self made video game store whose goal is to preserve the history of the video game industry. Just about any title or console you can think of is accessible in their diverse library. Rumor has it that these guys even have Virtual Boy VR headsets from the 90’s! Old school and new school gamers alike can come together and celebrate their love for gaming at this jack-of-all-trades gaming store.

2. WayPoint Cafe NYC - Gaming cafe

Any gamer into esports and competitive gaming definitely has to check out the WayPoint Cafe. There is no VR offering yet, since competitive gaming in Virtual Reality is only just beginning to gain traction, but they are fully equipped with 30 top of line gaming PC’s, ready to launch you and your squad into the fray. When you are not in the heat of battle, Waypoint is an extremely chill cafe where gamers can meet like-minded individuals and play the games they love. Maybe you’ll even find that last squadmate you’ve been searching for.

3. Kinokuniya - Comic Store, Japanese Cultural Center

If you're a bookworm looking for an extensive library of anime, manga, and other Japanese material to sink your teeth into, look no further than Kinokuniya. This is a perfect source for both Japanese and American material, and they do an amazing job of blending the two cultures. There isn’t a better place to visit if your an avid manga or graphic novel reader, looking to enjoy the latest volume of your favorite series. One of our favorite novel series is Sword Art Online (SAO), set in the year 2022, where gamers explore a VR world, seeking all of its amazing features and secrets. However, SAO is missing one of the most basic functions of any MMORPG - a logout button...

4. NYVR- VR Community Meetups

If you’re interested in Virtual Reality and are looking for ways to learn more about it, stop by the Microsoft HQ in Times Square for an NYVR Meetup. NYVR is a community whose main focus is the development of Virtual Reality technology and the impact that it can have on the world. It’s the perfect place to gain knowledge, and you can contribute to the development of one of the fastest growing tech industries in the world. This community has a special place in our hearts, because back in 2015 this was where we first showcased our Full Motion Racing simulator. Multiple members of this community also helped us build the Hubneo VR Lab in Manhattan.

5. Tinkersphere - Robotics/Hobby Shop

For any robotics enthusiast, Tinkersphere is New York City’s one-stop-shop. They offer a wide range of parts and supplies to fit almost any hobby or project. Tinkersphere provides its customers with the highest quality parts for their latest and greatest creations. At Hubneo, quite often we will need to go to Tinkersphere to buy spare parts for our VR Simulators, and we are always happy with the service and quality.

6. AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 - IMAX Movie Theater

When looking to catch the latest Sci-Fi movie, there is no better place to go than the AMC Loews in Lincoln Square. Home to the largest IMAX screen in NYC, you will be absolutely captivated by the display. It’s a mind blowing experience you must have when in the City. Some of the Hubneo staff watched Ready Player One in 3D at this theater 3 times in one week…

7. Next Level Arcade - Arcade

Since there are only experimental options as far as full motion tracking in VR, fighting games are not yet a popular VR genre. This will change the moment we have full body tracking and haptic suits at our disposal. Until then, some of the fiercest competition in all of fighting games can be found at New York’s Next Level Arcade. This is the hub for all fighting and trading card game enthusiasts in the city, amateur and professional alike. If you're looking for a place to level up your game with weekly tournaments and tons of friendly gamers, this is the place for you.

8. Micro Center - Computer Store

Every PC gamer’s dream is to build the fastest and coolest looking PC, but the cost of both is usually out of reach. That is not the case when you shop for your parts at Micro Center. They offer some of the best deals for PC parts in the city, and are fully equipped to handle your new VR Gaming experience with top of the line VR-Ready GPUs and a huge selection of VR headsets and VR gaming accessories. You won’t ever regret a purchase, allowing you to have your processor, and overclock it too.

9. Barcade - Arcade/Bar

If you’re on the hunt for your next favorite Friday night destination, look no further than Barcade. Equipped with a full bar, and enough retro arcade games to fill several weekends of fun, Barcade is a great place to go with a group of friends when you can’t decide if you should go out and drink, or stay home and game. Barcade is the happy marriage of both, and their lively Chelsea location is also outfitted with some great racing games, making it one of the unique places where drinking and driving is actually encouraged. An amazingly easy place to while away an evening on the town.

10. Hubneo VR Lab - VR Simulation & Gaming Center

We can’t forget our very own Hubneo VR Lab in Manhattan. You can find a lot of cool VR arcades in the city at the click of a button, however, Hubneo is New York's #1 location for Full Motion VR simulators. We have 100% custom built full-motion Racing and Flight simulators, Omnidirectional Treadmills, and wireless VR backpacks, all of which provide a VR experience you just can't find anywhere else. Whether you are an avid gamer looking to conquer the latest gaming frontier, a racer looking to train in the off-season, or someone just looking to get your sea legs in the immersive world of Virtual Reality, you will definitely leave the Lab with a desire for more.  Here’s the direction to our VR in NYC.

As you can see, the clubs and plays and designer stores are only a small part of what New York City has to offer. For those of us with a more refined taste in entertainment—who can enjoy the finer points of discussing character balancing and pixel density—New York is truly a gold mine… you just have to know where to look. We hope that this gives you some good ideas of where to start!
